A relative of an inmate allegedly hid the drug in his private parts to evade security checks. Troise (UILFP): "This incident is unacceptable, a structural prevention strategy is needed."
Avellino – A new security alert has been raised at the Avellino prison. Yesterday, during regular interviews in the common-room ward, a relative of an inmate allegedly attempted to smuggle a large quantity of narcotics into the facility.
According to reports to the UILFP Penitentiary Police, the drugs involved amounted to over 500 grams of hashish and cocaine, hidden in the suspect's private parts in an attempt to evade security checks.
The incident, still under investigation, has brought to light the structural issues at the Irpinia prison and the risk exposure of its security staff.
The union's statement: "It's no longer normal."
Raffaele Troise, head of the UILFP Penitentiary Police, intervened in the matter, calling the situation "no longer sustainable." "We need to seriously reflect on what the entry of such a significant quantity of drugs into the facility would have meant if the officers' professionalism and operational capabilities hadn't allowed them to intercept and stop the attempt," Troise stated.
The union representative emphasized that the risk is "daily" and affects not only the Penitentiary Police, but all staff who work closely with the inmate population. "We cannot continue to witness incidents of this gravity without implementing a structured prevention and safety strategy. Officers cannot be left alone to deal with increasingly complex situations with insufficient tools and resources," he added.
The requests: more staff, more technologies
The UILFP is calling for immediate strengthening of security measures, increased staffing, and greater availability of suitable tools and technologies to combat the introduction of illicit substances. "These incidents are unacceptable," Troise concludes, "and represent yet another alarm bell. We demand greater protection for prison staff and concrete action from the Administration."
The incident is part of a series of recurring security emergencies at the Avellino prison, where in recent months there have been smartphone seizures, tensions, and staff protests over resource shortages.
