Officers from the Naples Highway Police Department identified the illegal area after spotting a plume of smoke. Huge piles of materials and a periodic burning tank were found on site. Investigations into the company involved are ongoing.
The Naples State Police, as part of a service to prevent and combat illegal waste dumping, fires, and illegal environmental conduct, discovered an area used as an illegal landfill along the SS 162.
The sighting of the fire and its location
Officers from the Naples Highway Police Department, traveling along the highway from an elevated position, noticed a column of smoke and flames in the distance, consistent with a possible waste fire. Through observation, stakeout, and the use of GPS coordinates, the officers were able to pinpoint the exact location of the smoke.
The discovery of the illicit area
Upon arriving on site, the operators discovered an area where huge quantities of various types of waste had accumulated. A tank used for the periodic collection and burning of materials was also found within the site, confirming the area's illicit use.
Investigations and complaints
Subsequent investigations conducted by the State Police revealed that the area in question was managed by a local company. Two individuals were identified and subsequently charged with illegal waste burning. Investigations are ongoing to reconstruct the details of the responsibilities and circumstances surrounding the illegal disposal.
