A frightening morning broke out in Martina Franca, near the Palazzo Ducale, where a Ghanaian national caused panic, armed with an iron bar. The man violently struck several parked cars, smashing their windshields, and lunged at passersby before being subdued.

Four people were injured, fortunately discharged after initial medical treatment, in addition to extensive property damage, which is still being assessed. The motives for the attack and the mental and physical condition of the attacker, who may have been under the influence of drugs or suffering from psychiatric issues, remain unclear.

Residents' intervention and the risk of lynching

The attack was put to an end by the direct intervention of a group of citizens. According to reports, the Carabinieri arrived on the scene about twenty minutes after the initial reports, prompting residents to act independently to disarm the man and subdue him.

The attacker nearly faced lynching before being taken into custody by law enforcement. The incident sparked heated debate among the public: while many complained about the lack of security and the delays in rescue efforts, others criticized the excessive violence used by citizens to stop him.

Controversy over rescue efforts and the Mayor's request

Gianfranco Palmisano, mayor of Martina Franca and president of the Province of Taranto, spoke out forcefully on the matter, expressing his firm condemnation of the unacceptable episode of violence. The mayor stated that he has already requested the Ghanaian citizen's expulsion, awaiting further judicial developments.

The event sparked a heated local debate about public safety and how citizens should respond to emergencies.
