The tragic death of Umberto Sarnacchiaro on Via Amerigo Vespucci—which occurred shortly after another tragic and recent loss, that of 24-year-old Rebecca Pepe, struck on Viale Dohrn—is not an isolated incident. The numbers speak for themselves and transform crime news into a structural public safety issue: the road death toll in Naples has reached 14.

The road's weak link: pedestrians and two-wheelers in the crosshairs

Analyzing the profile of victims, a dramatic pattern emerges, calling into question the protection of vulnerable road users. Excluding cases attributable to sudden driver illnesses, the vast majority of those who have lost their lives since the beginning of the year belong to the most exposed groups: pedestrians and cyclists.

  • The pedestrian factor: Of a total of 12 accidents related to pure traffic dynamics, 8 victims were pedestrians . The most disconcerting fact provided by law enforcement and reiterated by local associations is that most of them were struck while they were in or immediately adjacent to a pedestrian crossing.

  • Vulnerability on two wheels: The increasingly widespread use of bicycles, e-bikes, and scooters in the chaotic flow of Naples traffic clashes with an often lethal mix of lanes. Impacts between motor vehicles and light vehicles, due to speed or distraction, are almost always devastating due to the complete lack of structural protection for cyclists and motorcyclists.

Structural causes: speed, distraction and infringements

The debate over urban safety in Naples points to an explosive mix of behavioral and infrastructural factors. On the one hand, administrators and citizens' committees openly denounce widespread indiscipline behind the wheel , which translates into failure to respect speed limits within the city limits, reckless use of smartphones while driving, and systematic violations of right of way at crossings.

On the other hand, there are critical issues related to the conformation of some large connecting arteries - such as the very route of Via Marina and Via Vespucci, or the seafronts - often conceived as long, fast-flowing lanes rather than shared, slow-moving urban spaces.

Towards what prevention? The committees' alarm cry

Faced with a growing toll month after month, civic committees and neighborhood associations are mobilizing. The requests made to local institutions go beyond institutional condolences, but also call for concrete and rapid action:

  1. Electronic and widespread monitoring: The installation of average speed detection systems ( urban speed cameras ) and fixed speed camera positions on roads with the highest risk of fatal accidents.

  2. Making crossings safer: Physically raising pedestrian crossings (standard speed bumps), improving street lighting in dark areas, and installing illuminated vertical signage.

  3. Educational campaigns and tough penalties: A crackdown on dangerous driving behavior, accompanied by urban planning focused on traffic calming (such as the extension of 30 km/h zones in residential and commercial neighborhoods).

The sequence of crosses on the Neapolitan asphalt calls for urgent collective reflection: road safety cannot be considered a mere inevitability, but a political and social priority that can no longer be postponed.
