Naples – The echoes of the commemoration for Giovanbattista Cutolo died down a few hours ago, but the blind rage of the violent nightlife is once again bloodying the streets of Naples. At the same time the city was remembering Giogiò, the residential neighborhood of Colli Aminei became the scene of yet another treacherous attack: eight people attacked two young men chatting in the street, leaving them injured.

The ambush in the night

The dynamics reflect the madness of the pack. It's the dead of night, and the two victims are sitting atop their scooters. The atmosphere is calm until the headlights of several mopeds pierce the darkness. At least eight individuals dismount and launch an immediate and savage attack.

Kicks and punches fly, metal chains and a knuckleduster appear. The lynching is interrupted by the timely intervention of an off-duty State Police officer, who attempts to subdue one of the fugitives, taking blows to the arms.

Investigations and reports

The two young men who were attacked suffered injuries that are expected to heal within 15 days, while the police officer who intervened is expected to be in recovery for two days. The police responded immediately: Carabinieri officers from the Capodimonte station, cross-referencing the officer's testimony with images from local security cameras and footage from the dashcam installed on one of the victims' scooters, identified five attackers.

They—including a minor—were charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage, and resisting a public official.

The hypothesis of the motive

Behind the gang's fury, there appears to be a trivial and banal motive: a provocative comment made by one of the victims to one of the gang members while he was in the car with his girlfriend. That was enough for the attacker to call for backup, return to the scene in force, and exact his own personal and disproportionate revenge.
