Naples is preparing to transform into an authentic Renaissance stage on Saturday, September 12, 2026, when the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will host the Ninth Edition of the Great Historical Reenactment "1527, When Naples Made the Vow to San Gennaro." The event, organized by the "I Sedili di Napoli ETS" Association and supported by numerous local and international partners, will begin at 4:00 PM from Porta Capuana and will feature over 150 participants dressed in authentic 16th-century costumes.
The reenactment retraces one of the most significant moments in Neapolitan history: in 1527, during a period marked by sieges, plagues, and natural disasters, representatives of the six historic Sedili of Naples signed a pact with San Gennaro, promising the construction of the Cappella del Tesoro in exchange for the city's salvation. The event commemorates this bond with a historical procession that will wind through the city center's main streets, including the Duomo for the solemn reading of the ancient contract.
The day's highlight will be the spectacular Renaissance Equestrian Joust, held in the evocative setting of Porta Capuana. Here, armored knights will compete in games of skill and duels, replicating the 1536 tournament held in honor of Emperor Charles V's triumphal entry into Naples. The arena will be covered with protective sand and enlivened by period music, offering a visual and audio spectacle of great impact.
The initiative aims not only to be a costume parade, but also a moment of historical and cultural rediscovery for Neapolitans and the many tourists. Admission to all events is free, with security provided by the Civil Protection Association "Base Condor." Numerous re-enactor groups from various cities will enliven the day, accompanied by music and narration that pays homage to the tradition and historical memory of Naples.
