New discoveries about melanoma: how the tumor eludes the immune system and therapies

An international study published in Science Advances has revealed how some metastatic melanoma cells modify their structure to evade the immune system and resist therapies.

At the heart of the research is the protein NFATC2, which appears to play a crucial role in the adaptation process of tumor cells. Targeting this protein could improve the immune system's ability to recognize and attack diseased cells.

The research, which involved researchers from Biogem's Computational Biology laboratory, analyzed biopsies taken from patients involved in the NIBIT-M4 clinical trial, which used a combination of an epigenetic drug (guadecitabine) and an immunotherapy (ipilimumab).

The advanced technologies adopted have allowed us to observe how, in patients responding to therapy, tumor cells become more vulnerable to immune attacks, while in resistant patients some cells maintain the ability to adapt and escape the body's defenses.

This study represents an important step in understanding differences in treatment responses among patients with the same type of melanoma and could lead to the development of more personalized and effective therapeutic strategies against tumor resistance.
