A scam targeting an 82-year-old woman nearly succeeded, but the victim's quick thinking allowed the scheme to be reversed and two alleged perpetrators to be arrested within minutes. A 61-year-old and a 44-year-old, both residents of Naples and already known to law enforcement, were arrested on charges of aggravated conspiracy to commit fraud.
The story began in Segni, where the woman received a phone call from a man who posed as a law enforcement official. The scenario involved her husband's car being involved in a robbery in Artena, and a supposed "colleague" was supposed to come to the house to inspect and photograph the family jewels, believed to be useful in clearing her husband of all charges.
Shortly thereafter, the 44-year-old showed up at the door, pretending to be a member of the Carabinieri. He allegedly managed to get gold jewelry and approximately €500 in cash, before leaving.
The victim, however, sensed something wasn't right. Looking out the window, she noticed her alleged accomplice approaching a white Jeep Renegade and partially memorized the license plate. She then immediately called 112, providing the emergency services with a description of the man and the vehicle.
The report was transmitted in real time from the Colleferro Operations Center to the Cassino Highway Police. Officers from the Highway Police Subsection, conducting checks along the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, intercepted the Jeep carrying both men shortly thereafter.
The search resulted in the complete recovery of the stolen goods, which were subsequently seized pending their return to the owner. Following the investigation, the two suspects were placed under precautionary measures.
The preliminary investigations judge of the Cassino Court, granting the prosecutor's requests, confirmed the arrests, charging both with aggravated fraud. The two were ordered to remain in their municipality of residence, to report daily to the judicial police, and to be prohibited from leaving their home between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
According to investigators, the woman's promptness in contacting the emergency number was crucial. The joint intervention of the Carabinieri and the Highway Patrol allowed the alleged perpetrators to be identified while they were still on the run and to recover the entire loot. Both are presumed innocent until a final verdict is reached.
