Rieti – State Police foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs and phone cards into the Rieti prison, arresting two men from the province of Salerno. The operation, coordinated by the Police Headquarters' Flying Squad, began a few days ago following a tip-off from Penitentiary Police personnel serving at the "New Complex," who had noticed the presence of suspicious individuals in the immediate vicinity of the prison.
The officers located and arrested the two suspects in an isolated area behind the prison, while they were in possession of a drone and two packages containing smartphone SIM cards and narcotics, ready to be launched inside the prison facility.
When investigators searched the room of a bed and breakfast in Rieti where the two were staying, they found further illicit material: other narcotics, a precision scale, and tools for packaging the doses.
Overall, approximately 400 grams of hashish, 250 grams of cocaine, and 90 grams of ketamine were seized, as well as approximately €4.000 in cash, likely the proceeds of illicit activities. Those arrested are at the disposal of the judicial authorities; investigations are continuing to determine any possible links to the inmates and the possible drug dealing network inside and outside the prison.
