A breakthrough has been reached in the investigation into the tragedy that shattered the tranquility of Apice and the entire Sannio region. A key witness has been identified, a crucial piece of evidence currently being examined by investigators, capable of reconstructing in minute detail the final, dramatic stages of the family massacre that unfolded in the Licciardi family's guesthouse.

He was one of the club's employees, who narrowly escaped the outburst of violence: he witnessed the exact moment Gianni Licciardi opened fire on his brother Franco, before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.

The worker managed to escape just as the eldest of the three brothers, gripped by an uncontrollable and blind murderous rage, grabbed his gun and began shooting into the restaurant's garden. Having overcome the state of profound shock and psychological prostration into which he had fallen immediately following the events, yesterday the witness was interviewed at length by the Carabinieri of the Benevento Company, who are conducting the investigation under the coordination of the local Public Prosecutor's Office.

He offered the military a detailed and poignant account of dramatic sequences that will be difficult to erase from their memory.

Blind spots and the crux of the footage

The employee's testimony, however, has a logistical limitation: he did not witness the first phase of the massacre, the attack on his younger brother, Donato Licciardi. This final crime took place indoors, in the building's interior rooms, shielded from outside view.

To clarify this mystery, the investigating magistrate is relying on the results of the forensic examinations and, above all, the audiovisual material. He is awaiting the assignment of the autopsies on the three bodies, a crucial test for precisely establishing the trajectory of the bullets and the chronological sequence of the shots.

At the same time, investigators are proceeding with the analytical examination and seizure of the images recorded by the business's sophisticated video surveillance system: the numerous cameras positioned both inside and around the outside of the accommodation facility will allow them to track every single movement before and after the double homicide.

Disagreements over management and the shadow of the sale

Regarding the motive for the massacre, the Prosecutor's Office and the Carabinieri now seem to be leaning toward a framework of consolidated certainties. The sudden escalation of violence was apparently triggered by irreconcilable economic and strategic differences related to the management of the hotel-restaurant.

On one side, Franco and Donato Licciardi, leaning toward a reorganization of the structure and in favor of a permanent sale of the family business; on the other, Gianni, adamant in his opposition to the transfer of ownership.

It was precisely over this issue that the latest and final altercation between Gianni and Franco broke out: a verbal confrontation that escalated within moments into gunfire. Immediately after killing the first brother in the courtyard outside, the fifty-five-year-old headed inside, reaching Donato, and then capping the bloody sequence by turning the same gun on himself.

Computer surveys and waiting for the funeral

The investigators' work will continue unabated in the coming hours. The Carabinieri will formally interview the victims' families, their collaborators, and those involved in the daily operations of the restaurant business, in order to more clearly delineate the history of resentment and misunderstandings between the three brothers. The Carabinieri's IT experts are also examining the smartphones, computers, and electronic devices belonging to the three victims: they are searching for messages, emails, or written notes that could document the recent deterioration in their relationship.

A community in shock: the pain of Apice

Meanwhile, in Apice, an unreal atmosphere reigns. The echoes of a tragedy of such magnitude have plunged the entire Sannio town into a state of profound shock, dismay, and stunned silence. A close-knit community, accustomed to the peaceful rhythms of the province, suddenly finds itself confronted with a bloodbath of unprecedented ferocity, committed between people known and respected by all.

In the town's squares and meeting places, people are talking about nothing else, with some expressing disbelief at an intolerable outburst of violence within the family and others grieving the grief of their remaining relatives.
