Coronavirus, the shame of gloves and masks thrown on the ground begins. Borrelli (Greens): “Very high risk of pollution, heavy fine for those who throw PPE on the ground”.
“Gloves and masks thrown on the ground and even in toilets. A real pollution alarm that, with the start of phase two, risks exploding even more. Gloves and masks are starting to be found even in the sea, where fishermen are starting to find them in their nets. With more people on the streets there will be even more uncivilized people who will throw personal protective equipment on the ground, as if the asphalt of the city arteries were a garbage bin. Especially near supermarkets, as we have repeatedly denounced in recent weeks, hundreds of them are found. Throwing used gloves and masks on the ground is dangerous for two important reasons: it greatly increases pollution and, above all, it carries germs and therefore increases the possibility of contagion from Covid-19. In fact, some studies have shown that the virus can maintain its infectious load on surfaces even for days. Furthermore, gloves thrown down drains risk blocking the flow of water in case of rain”. This is what was declared by Francesco Emilio Borrelli, regional councilor of the Greens.
"It is no coincidence that the Istituto Superiore della Sanità has ordered masks and gloves to be thrown into the unsorted waste container, preferably at home and not in the bins on the street. Before doing so, it is a good idea to place them in a resistant plastic bag or in a couple of overlapping bags, to avoid them being scattered in the environment. The Polytechnic University of Turin - added Borrelli - has estimated the quantity of devices that could be used during Phase 2 in Italy: approximately 1 billion masks and half a billion disposable gloves per month. If even just 1% of the masks were disposed of incorrectly, it would translate into over 40 thousand kg of plastic in nature. To avoid this tragedy and prevent charlatans from throwing them on the street, we have asked President De Luca to provide for a new ordinance with very high fines. If we hit them in the wallet, they will think twice before throwing PPE on the street as unfortunately is already starting to happen".
