Castellammare di Stabia. In compliance with the rules for preventing the spread of Coronavirus, still in force, the funeral of the Archbishop Emeritus of Sorrento-Castellammare di Stabia, Felice Cece, will be celebrated in a restricted form.
The prelate passed away this morning in a private hospital at the age of 84. He had been ill for several years and in July he would have celebrated 61 years of priestly ordination. He led the Sorrentino-Stabiese diocese for over 20 years, also hosting Pope John Paul II on a pastoral visit to Castellammare di Stabia and Sorrento in the 90s. Originally from Cimitile, near Nola, after leading the diocese of Teano-Calvi he began his episcopal ministry in the diocese of Sorrento-Castellammare di Stabia in 1989 until 2012. Many have expressed words of condolence and affection on social media. "His life," said the current bishop Francesco Alfano, "was a true and transparent testimony of the love of the Good Shepherd for his flock; we accompany him with prayer, expressing our affection and gratitude for what we have received from him and through him." A prayer vigil is planned this evening in the Cathedral which will be broadcast live. (emidav)
