More spills into the sea from the emergency drain of the city sewer network located at the foot of Rione Terra, near the small church of Assunta in Pozzuoli. Brownish and smelly water that ends up directly in the sea, polluting the adjacent body of water.
The “overflow” in question concerns the pumping station on Via Cavour, which in 2017 underwent renovation and enhancement work costing around half a million euros. Like all the other 14 drains along the coast, it should only be activated in the event of heavy rain to prevent the sewer pipes from collapsing, but several times in recent years, spills into the sea have occurred even in the total absence of rainfall. This latest episode prompted the city councilors of the M5S and “Pozzuoli ORA!” to file a complaint with the Port Authority of Pozzuoli, after having reported the incident via a Facebook live broadcast.
«It is unacceptable that the Municipality is the one polluting the sea – claim the signatories of the complaint –. This is not the first time we have witnessed this outrage, episodes of this kind occur often and in different parts of the coast. We have brought the problem to the attention of the Administration several times, without ever reaching a definitive resolution. Unsolved structural problems, despite the many millions spent with the "major projects" and, in our opinion, also poor management of the integrated water system are at the root of these spills. For 4 years we have not been able to award the tender for the maintenance of the water and sewerage network. These days we are on the home straight, but since April 2016 we have continued with assignments at 30-40-80-120 days, sometimes without a tender, and moreover splitting up the management of the activities. Even a child would understand that in this way it is not possible to fully guarantee the good functioning of the network. If we add to this the long-standing and unresolved problems generated by the riverbeds, canals and collectors (Camaldoli, Quarto, Abbruzzese and Borbonico) we are not surprised if the Arpac data from the beginning of the 2020 season, unfortunately, tell us that the quality of the sea in Pozzuoli has worsened. The health of the sea is the health of the citizens as well as an essential point for sustainable tourism development of the territory, but it seems that these simple concepts are not really part of the "sensitivity" of the Figliolia Administration. In recent years we have witnessed many catwalks and many promises have been made, but in reality we have seen very few. The regional elections are approaching and unfortunately, we will still hear a lot of chatter and promises. Even ENOUGH!»
