Among the winners are the Nobel Prize winner Emmanuelle Charpentier and the journalist Gennaro Sangiuliano, director of Tg2
The traditional event with culture and dissemination returns to Vico Equense on Friday 7 October at 18.00:17 p.m. The Museo Mineralogico Campano – Fondazione Discepolo has organized the twenty-fourth edition of the International Scientific Award “Capo d'Orlando” in the historic Giusso Castle, which has been awarded and presented to 2020 Nobel Prize winners, among others. The public event will be chaired by Prof. Matteo Lorito, Rector of the University “Federico II” of Naples, the university that sponsors the event together with CNR, UGIS, Regione Campania and the City of Vico Equense. The silver plaque, reproducing one of the Cretaceous fossil fish found in the XNUMXth century in Capo d'Orlando (Vico Equense), will be presented during a public event centered on conferences and speeches by the winners of the various sections. The scientific award will go to Professor Emmanuelle Charpentier, Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry in XNUMX and Director of the Institute of Infectious Diseases at the Max Planck Institute in Berlin.
The French scientist is co-inventor of CRISPR, the revolutionary technique defined as the “cut and sew” of DNA, which is opening up new fields of research in microbiology and medical applications. For the “Science and Food” section, the award will go to Dr. Carla Ferreri, Senior Researcher at the CNR in Bologna. For the “Multimedia Communication” section, the award will go to Dr. Gennaro Sangiuliano, Director of Rai TG2, creator of the program “Discovering the Museums of Italy”.
For “Science and Industry” the silver plaque will be collected by Dr. Alberto Candiani, President of Candiani Spa, one of the leading international companies in eco-sustainable fashion, while for the “Dissemination” section the award will go to Prof. Enrico Alleva, Vice President of the Superior Council of Health of Rome. The recognition for “Cultural Management” will be given to Dr. Fabio Pagano, Director of the Archaeological Park of Campi Flegrei. The event will be moderated by Dr. Anna Meldolesi, journalist of the “Corriere della Sera”.
The “Capo d'Orlando” Award, created in 1999 by Umberto Celentano, Director of the Vico Equense Museum, boasts in its Roll of Honour protagonists of science such as the mathematician John F. Nash, whose story inspired the film “A Beautiful Mind”, the biologist James Watson, co-discoverer of DNA, the physicist Andre Geim, creator of the discovery of Graphene, of which he donated specimens to the Vico Equense Museum, and since 2020 has had as its Honorary President Sir Paul Nurse, Nobel Prize Winner, and Director of the Francis Crick Institute in London.
“We are pleased to welcome again this year illustrious exponents of the world of science, popularization and culture – explains Dr. Umberto Celentano – that will make the list of our event's winners increasingly prestigious. In an increasingly complex world faced with many challenges, including scientific ones, knowledge and correct dissemination are fundamental tools for understanding and knowing how to orient oneself".
The event, with its long and consolidated tradition behind it, has long been an integral part of the tourist-cultural program of the City of Vico Equense and contributes to raising its name to an international level: “The prize – adds the mayor Giuseppe Aiello – represents a public recognition of those who work with great results in the world of science and research. An event of great appeal, capable of attracting the attention of the media and creating a high-quality tourist industry, also given the participation of world-famous protagonists. We are proud to be able to promote events like this one that have been held for over 20 years in Vico Equense, enriching its cultural and tourist offerings, contributing to embellishing the image of our city”.
