Uan educational-sporting path involving footballers, former footballers and technical staff made available by the Italian Footballers' Association (AIC) to promote the socialization of young inmates in juvenile detention centers.
The initiative, called “Free kick”, was presented today at a press conference in Rome by the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, by the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, and by the President of the AIC, Umberto Calcagno.
The agreement, which will be effective until the end of 2024 and will be renewable, provides that in the structures identified by the Ministry of Justice preliminary meetings will be held with former footballers who will talk about their professional experience; they will be followed by a six-week training preparation, held by technical staff selected by the AIC for two hours a week, and by a final football match.
“Sport, like work, especially for the younger ones, is an extraordinary opportunity to transform the time of punishment into an authentic path of recovery, according to the dictates of the Constitution”, declared Minister Nordio.
“Thanks to this protocol, our boys will be accompanied by football champions, willing to do their part in the fundamental task of returning to free society more aware people, who will no longer return to crime”.
“Free Football is an emblematic title of this protocol”, said Minister Abodi.
"This is a project that has unmistakable constitutional characteristics. I hope that the effects of this day will be historic, that is, the more organized and systematic Entry of Football into its components so that it expresses its function not only in its educational form, but in the re-education of sport in all its forms.
The concept of bringing normality back to a condition in which the right to normality must be recovered, because evidently not only has a rule been breached, but often a person has been offended in the broadest sense of the term”.
“For the Footballers' Association it is an honor to be part of this project and to be its operational arm”, underlined the President of the AIC, Umberto Calcagno.
"An important initiative that enhances the path we have undertaken for more than ten years, since we included former footballers by involving them in social initiatives to bring young people closer to sport. This project will allow us to get in touch with kids who have made some mistakes and we hope to be able to transfer to them our 'know-how to work as a team' through the re-educational aspect of Football".
The “Free Football” project will involve three juvenile penal institutions: Casal del Marmo (Rome), Beccaria (Milan) and Fornelli (Bari). In each facility, the program includes:
Meetings with an ex-professional footballer
Weekly training sessions held by a staff of former professional footballers involved by the AIC Junior Department
Final match, between the minors participating in the project, prison officers, former footballers and local authorities
The aim of the project is to promote the socialization and reintegration of young prisoners through sports, especially football. Sports can help young people develop their skills, learn to work in a team and respect the rules. Furthermore, it can help them regain self-confidence and build positive relationships with others.
The “Free Football” project is an important initiative that can help improve the lives of young prisoners and reduce the risk of recidivism.
