“The Sanctuary of Venus in Herculaneum and the sea front of the ancient city” – Auditorium of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, January 19th at 17 pm.
The International Association Friends of Pompeii ETS hosts the conference of the archaeologist Mario Notomista. On January 26, the work of Laurentino Garcia y Garcia is presented.
There are two meetings in the first month of 2024 organized by the International Association of Friends of Pompeii ETS.
On January 19, at the auditorium of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, starting at 17 pm, the archaeologist Mario Notomista will hold the conference “The Sanctuary of Venus in Herculaneum and the sea front of the ancient city”.
What is the history of the sanctuary located on the sea of Herculaneum? When and how was it excavated? What type of structure and religious and social path did it represent? How was the cult of Venus configured in the first century AD and in previous periods? Venus Euploia or Ericina? What relationship did this cult have with the life of the city, with the rest of the monuments and with its inhabitants? These questions will be answered in the meeting with Mario Notomista, archaeologist of the Herculaneum Conservation Project, who has been working on this sanctuary since 2015.
“I will try – explains Mario Notomista – to take stock of the archaeological history of this area built on the seafront of ancient Herculaneum, linked to the cult of Venus, drawing reflections from the comparison with other sanctuaries located on the sea and with other forms of worship of the divinity attested in the Mediterranean. The aim is to outline the specific function of this sanctuary in Herculaneum, both with respect to other places of worship of the time, and in the context of the public life of the ancient city. A way to return an important piece to understanding the life of the citizens of the time.”
The meetings of the International Association of Friends of Pompeii ETS continue on Friday 26 January (17,00:XNUMX pm) with the presentation of the three-volume work by Laurentino Garcia y Garcia “Nova Bibliotheca Pompeiana, Herculanensis, Stabiana Oplontinaque. Analytical bibliography and encyclopedic repertory on the Vesuvian cities”. The archaeologist Grete Stefani and professor Antonio Varone will speak together with the author.
