The Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano will unveil tomorrow, Tuesday 16 January 2024 at 10 am, at the Library of the classical and scientific high school “Francesco Sbordone” in Naples, the commemorative plaque for the historian Raffaele Ajello and the philosopher Gerardo Marotta.
The initiative is part of the activities of the fourth edition of the Olympics and Acropolis of Knowledge promoted by the Pietrasanta Polo Culturale ETS association with the Sbordone high school.
The meeting will be introduced by the school principal Laura Colantonio and moderated by the president of the Pietrasanta association Raffaele Iovine, a student of Ajello.
After the institutional greetings of the president of the third Municipality Fabio Greco, the children of Raffaele Ajello and Gerardo Marotta, Roberta Ajello and Massimiliano Marotta, will speak, followed by a conference with speeches by: Candida Carrino, director of the State Archives of Naples; Ileana Del Bagno president of the association "Raffaele Ajello"; Arturo Martorelli Member of the Executive Council of the Italian Institute for Philosophical Studies; Dario Luongo Professor of History of Medieval and Modern Law Parthenope University of Naples; Francesco Di Donato Professor of History of Political Institutions Federico II University of Naples; Marco Nicola Minetti Professor of History of Medieval and Modern Law University of Foggia; Renata Pilati Professor of History and Philosophy.
The Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano will speak at the conclusions and unveiling of the commemorative plaque.
Raffaele Ajello passed away on March 30, 2020. Former professor emeritus of History of Italian Law at the Faculty of Law of the Federico II University of Naples and one of the greatest Italian historians of the 900th century. Ajello was well known to the public, even to non-experts, not only for numerous monographs, but also for three book series directed by him and increased by his works and those of his school. A scholar of the history of the judiciary in Southern Italy and of Enlightenment reformism, of legal culture in the Middle Ages and modern times, Ajello is considered one of the major protagonists of the renewal of Italian legal historiography in recent decades.
Gerardo Marotta passed away in Naples on January 25, 2017. He graduated in Law with a thesis in Philosophy of Law. A scholar of history, literature and Philosophy, he was close to the Italian Institute for Historical Studies founded by Benedetto Croce. He first founded the association Cultura Nuova, which he directed until 1953, organizing events and conferences aimed at young people that attracted all the greatest personalities of Italian culture, and then, in 1975, the Italian Institute for Philosophical Studies, of which he was President until his death. Marotta donated his personal library to the institute, with over 300 thousand volumes, the result of thirty years of passionate research.
