LThe management of the “Alfonso Maria De Liquori” high school in Acerra has taken the decision to suspend seventy students, who have been identified as the main organizers and participants of an occupation that began on January 8.
The students occupied the school to draw attention to the problem of “biocide” in the area known as “Land of Fires.” In a statement, the students highlighted the lack of attention to their requests from the school and local institutions.
They contested the suspension decision as a serious repressive action and expressed surprise that only the so-called “promoters” or “simple occupiers” were sanctioned, despite the large participation of students in the occupation.
The students also denounced the silence around the polluting plant in their city as the main reason for the occupation. They stressed that the occupation was born with the intention of being constructive and supported by all, criticizing the school management for hypocritically participating in the students' mobilization and then repressing the initiative, trying to minimize the involvement to only 70 students.
The student protest highlights a strong concern for the environment and public health and raises important questions about the role of institutions in addressing the problem of biocide.
