Lin collaboration between the mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi and the artist Jorit to save the Maradona mural represents a significant step for the urban regeneration of the Taverna del Ferro neighborhood.
The mural is an integral part of the iconography of the neighborhood and represents an important symbol for the entire city of Naples. The mayor and the Councilor for Urban Planning Laura Lieto have placed the needs of the territory and its inhabitants at the center of the urban regeneration project.
Furthermore, priority was given to the direct involvement of residents in decision-making, demonstrating a strong commitment to listening to the voices of the community. The decision to demolish two large structures in the neighborhood was taken after a careful evaluation related to structural and energy reasons, as well as after a constructive discussion with the residents.
This step is aimed at creating an alternative neighborhood model, with smaller spaces and housing units designed specifically for the residents. Preserving the Maradona mural on its current site has proven to be technically complicated and economically expensive, as it would have compromised the construction of 40 new homes planned in the redevelopment project.
Consequently, the dismantling of the current wall and the reconstruction of the new work dedicated to Maradona in a different place within the neighborhood are being evaluated. The mayor has committed to involving the artist Jorit in the new artistic project of San Giovanni a Teduccio, with the aim of finding viable solutions in the process of urban regeneration of the neighborhood and of strengthening the bond with the figure of Maradona, an important symbol for the city of Naples.
