Iyou were in the Carinola prison, a prisoner in charge of shopping attacked two Superintendents with punches, slaps and kicks, creating an emergency situation.
This episode is just one of many that highlight the need for a new custodial model, as underlined by Tiziana Guacci and Ettore Natale, regional secretaries of SAPPE (Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police).
Following the request for explanations regarding some products missing from the shopping list, the prisoner, dissatisfied with the outcome of the conversation, launched a sudden violent attack against the Superintendents.
Despite the police officers present at the scene attempting to stop him, the prisoner managed to hit another Superintendent before being finally subdued.
The two assaulted Superintendents, along with an Assistant Chief Coordinator who attempted to stop the attacker, were forced to seek medical attention.
The prisoner returned to his ward without suffering any consequences, having been declared unfit for isolation by the doctors on duty.
Responding to the situation, SAPPE condemned the attack, arguing that such critical and violent incidents generate significant operational stress for prison police personnel.
SAPPE Secretary General Donato Capece expressed his concern for the safety of police officers and called for urgent measures, including tougher penalties for inmates who attack Penitentiary Police personnel during their detention.
SAPPE leader Donato Capece has appealed to the top brass of the DAP (Department of Penitentiary Administration) to introduce strict rules to ensure order and security in penitentiary facilities.
Capece called for the imposition of “zero tolerance” towards violent inmates and stressed the urgent need for state intervention to combat the impunity that prevails in prisons.
