TAmong countless regions and cities scattered around the globe, Naples and Campania conquer a prominent place on the Taste Atlas, the very famous online platform specialized in culinary rankings.
Wallet Pizza: A True Star of Neapolitan Street Food
For foodies, Taste Atlas is an authoritative reference. This online guide of Croatian origin, available in English, enjoys great popularity, thanks to its ease of use and the wide range of content it offers. Although its rankings are only indicative, they are followed closely by many professionals in the sector.
When we talk about regional cuisines, such as Roman, Neapolitan or Tuscan, it is normal to be pervaded by a certain parochial pride. However, we must keep in mind that they are simply a tool to promote local gastronomy and stimulate curiosity for new culinary discoveries, ranging from the Middle East to Africa, from South America to Asia and from the Far East to Oceania.
Analyzing the Taste Atlas rankings, the popularity of Campania cuisine and, in particular, Neapolitan cuisine is evident. This primacy, based not on a single ranking, but on the entire panorama of Taste Atlas rankings, shows how Naples and Campania are highly appreciated by gourmets from all over the world.
Neapolitan Culinary Specialties Acclaimed Globally
On the podium of the “100 Best Dishes in the World” ranking, Italy ranks fourth, represented by Neapolitan Pizza. Among the most iconic pizzerias cited, Starita a Materdei, I Masanielli di Francesco Martucci in Caserta and Antica Pizzeria da Michele in Forcella stand out.
Moving on to the “Best Food Cities & Regions” ranking, Naples comes in third, thanks to delicacies such as Pizza Margherita, Sfogliatella, Zeppole, Taralli and Pasta e patate. The restaurants awarded for their authenticity are Starita, Sorbillo, Antica Trattoria e Pizzeria da Donato, 50 Kalò and Forno delle Sfogliatelle dei Fratelli Attanasio.
Campania, a region rich in delicacies
Campania also stands out in the “Best Food Regions in the World” ranking, surpassing Emilia-Romagna, the island of Java in Indonesia, the island of Crete in Greece, Sicily and the coastal province of Guangdong, in China. The most celebrated dishes are Pizza, Genovese Sauce, Linguine allo Scoglio, Parmigiana napoletana and Gnocchi alla Sorrentina. Among the flagship products are Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, Bocconcini, Limone di Sorrento, Lasagna and Provola.
A platform loved by foodies all over the world
Taste Atlas has won the hearts of users thanks to the clarity of the information and the ease of navigation, both on computers and smartphones. Among the various thematic rankings proposed, we find those dedicated to first courses, fresh cheeses, salads, ice creams and desserts.
There are many Neapolitan and Campanian specialties included, to mention the Parmigiana alla Napoletana, the Neapolitan Pizza, the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, the Spaghetti al Pomodoro, the Babà al Rum, the Sfogliatella, the Caprese Salad and the Limoncello. Among the legendary pizzerias in the world there are two Neapolitan pizzerias: the historic Michele in Forcella and the Sorbillo pizzeria in Via dei Tribunali.
Unfortunately, there are no Neapolitan or Italian sites in the top 10 of places to enjoy desserts and only one ice cream shop in Naples appears in the ranking of the best ice cream shops. Finally, among the best cookbooks there is a volume dedicated to Campanian gastronomy, but it is written by a foreign author: it is “Naples at Table: Cooking in Campania” by Arthur Schwartz, published in 1998.
