A Journey into Contemporary Cuban Art in Baronissi
Promoted by the Municipality of Baronissi, the Museo-FRaC and the Rossi Foundation, in collaboration with the Libera Accademia di Pittura and with the contribution of the Campania Region as part of the initiatives for the “promotion and enhancement of museums and libraries”, the exhibition offers an extraordinary artistic experience. The exhibition presents thirty works including paintings, drawings, graphics, photography and performance videos, exploring contemporary Cuban art. The artists exhibited are mostly residents in Cuba and belong to the generations that have emerged on the international scene in the last four decades.
Curatorship and Exhibited Artists
Curated by Massimo Bignardi, the exhibition opens with the graphic works of Wifredo Lam, a key figure in the rebirth of Cuban art. His works highlight a fusion between the anthropological dimension of his Cuban origins and the dialogue with the European avant-gardes of the 1940s and 1950s. The exhibition continues with the works of Denis Ascanio, Carlos Boix, Leonardo Feal Bonachea, José Antonio Choy López, Ángel Delgado, José Ángel Rosabal Fajardo, Carlos Martiel and Ángel Ricardo Ríos.
Mission of the Exhibition
Anna Petta, Mayor of Baronissi, emphasizes the mission of the exhibition: “To open a dialogue with the Foundations, with the contemporary art collections, with the Academies, the Universities, the recognized associations that operate in the regional context”. This vision has made the Baronissi Regional Contemporary Art Fund a museum institution recognized at the national level. The exhibition traces a significant path of the contemporary Cuban artistic debate, highlighting a multiplicity of styles and languages in dialectical comparison with European and North American culture.
Reflection on Artistic Continuity
Massimo Bignardi recalls a quote from Hemingway to underline the central theme of the exhibition: “Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed, but not defeated”. This thought expresses the resilience and constant evolution of Cuban artists, helping to keep the contemporary art scene alive and current.
International Projects
The exhibition is part of the international projects of the Bugatti-Segantini Prize, aimed at promoting cultural comparison and the plurality of creative exchanges. These projects have enriched the collection of the Rossi Foundation, focused on Latin American artistic culture and, in particular, on Cuban contemporary art. The focus is on both traditional and current forms and languages, reflecting the economic and social changes in Cuba in recent years. The exhibition will remain open until September 22, 2024.
