RFollowing the success achieved last July 14th – at the suggestive location of the Castello di Lettere – the Lucanian narrator Dino De Angelis, with his latest performance, “Heart of Darkness”, based on the book of the same name by Joseph Conrad, returns to Campania on August 28th, performing this same show at the Sunset bar in Castellammare di Stabia.
A territory, that of Castellammare, which always welcomes him with enthusiasm, having appreciated his talent in previous shows.
With “Heart of Darkness” De Angelis proposes a mix between Conrad's book and Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation.
This experimental project is also gaining significant public consensus, particularly attracted by the refined communicative and interpretative quality of the author.
That of the De Angelis it is not a simple narrated exposition of the story which is the subject of the novel, but a perfect identification with the protagonist Charles Marlow, who is the leader of an expedition in the heart of Africa.
A journey that reveals the atrocities of white colonialism and offers food for thought that verbally documents – and with the help of peculiar images – the descent into the abyss of the psyche.
The adventure at sea, the clash with nature and the conflicts of the human soul are perceived by the spectator in a well-constructed theatrical dimension, with the background of mysterious sounds that bring to mind the suffering of the natives.
The author, and director of the show, offers his interpretation to both narrative voices that constitute the structure of the story. In that pleasure boat at the mouth of the Thames – the Nellie – where everything begins, there are 5 friends who wait for the right tide to begin a cruise, but the light of the sun setting on the river gives way to darkness, that which reveals the insensitive and greedy hearts of white people, guilty of very serious crimes.
Intonation, pauses from the prevailing silence, gestures, everything expressed by the author on stage faithfully reflects the sacredness of the story, especially in Marlow's dialogue with the mysterious Kurtz, who is now ill but who over time has been collecting ivory, generating huge profits for the traffickers of this precious material.
Kurtz has known horror, the kind that whispers in his empty heart and turns into a scream, a true redemption of nature.
The music, which enriches the scene with substance and content, is entrusted to the well-known artist from Castellammare di Stabia, Salvatore Torregrossa, who found it stimulating and extremely fascinating to adapt his accordion to a multimedia show so well made and, moreover, close to the reality of the storytellers.
The artistic partnership between the two has in fact proven to be a winning one, representing the excellent premise for their consolidated collaboration.
The harmonious and engaging voice of the actress Tonia Bruno from Lucania is instead entrusted with the significant role of Kurtz's girlfriend, to whom Marlow must tell an important truth. The touching atmosphere that reigns in this emotional finale, accompanied by the power of that truth, worthily celebrates the imposing value of the artistic work as a whole.
The setting chosen to bring this Castellammare show to life – the Sunset Bar on Via Giuseppe Bonito – with the sea as a backdrop and the evening lights making it shine – is therefore the perfect setting to sublimate the talent of the artists present, but also to make participation in the announced evening even more stimulating.
