IIn terms of absolute values, on the podium for robberies we find Rome, Milan and Naples, but evaluating the data in proportion to the resident population, Rome is only in 32nd place (275 reports per 100 thousand inhabitants), Milan in 30th place (282 reports per 100 thousand inhabitants) and Naples is even among the most virtuous, in 86th place with just 126 reports.
This is according to Vamonos Vacanze, the Italian tour operator specializing in group vacations. In relation to the number of inhabitants of each province, the province of Pisa is first with 420 reports of home thefts per 100 inhabitants, followed by Pavia in second place with 390 reports, and Monza and Brianza in third place with 361 reports.
Turin is in 25th place with 267 reports, Palermo in 121st place with 108 reports, Genoa in 79th place with 149 reports, Bologna in 5th place with 357 reports, Florence in 10th place with 337 reports, Bari in 74th place with 159 reports, Catania in 90th place with 110 reports, Verona in 25th place with 290 reports, Venice in 11th place with 335 reports.
The specialists at Vamonos-Vacanze.it have explored this topic in depth with a survey commissioned by the Ircm Research Institute, which measured the levels of sensitivity on this issue in the various regions of Italy.
But how much does the 'dangerousness' of each territorial context affect it? The research shows a growing concern for this phenomenon: on average 83% of Italians consider home burglaries a priority issue when undertaking a trip, with higher than average values in 11 regions: Lazio (89,7%), Campania (88,4%), Tuscany (87,2%), Umbria (87%), Liguria (86,9%), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (86,5%), Piedmont (85,9%), Veneto (85,5%), Sicily (85,2%), Sardinia (84,8%) and Trentino-Alto Adige (84,6%).
“In line with the national data is Emilia-Romagna (83%), while 8 regions are below average: Molise (82,5%), Puglia (82,2%), Marche (82%), Calabria (81,7%), Basilicata (80,9%), Abruzzo (79,5%), Valle d'Aosta (75,3%) and Lombardy (71,2%).
However, 66,5% of Italians (-4,3% compared to the same survey in 2023) believe they can implement the right measures to prevent this unpleasant eventuality: 68% of men (-2,1% compared to 2023) and 65% of women (-5,8% compared to 2023). However, only 15% of men (+3,8% compared to 2023) and 15% of women (+100% compared to 2023) actually fear theft”, point out the specialists at Vamonos-Vacanze.it.
What measures have our fellow citizens implemented to stem this growing phenomenon? According to the survey by the Ircm Research Institute, developed on behalf of Vamonos-Vacanze.it, on a sample of 1.000 men and 1.000 women equally distributed across the different regions of Italy, 24% will leave with peace of mind because during the holidays they will have their home checked by friends, family or neighbors (-36,8% compared to 2023).
A larger percentage (45%) will instead rely on alarm or video surveillance systems (+50% compared to 2023) and 21% will rely on armored doors, iron shutters or grates (+31,3% compared to 2023).
“But there will also be a 7% who will use the old system of leaving some light on or even the radio or TV (-22,2% compared to 2023)”, say the analysts of Vamonos-Vacanze.it, who underline how this is the least effective method of all
