Napoli From 1 October 2022, the funicular of Chiaia is at a standstill, leaving over 15 commuters stranded every day.
Despite the urgency of the situation and the inconvenience caused to citizens, maintenance work seems to be at a standstill, with unjustified delays that have now been going on for almost two years.
Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collineri, denounces the serious situation: “The Chiaia funicular, a piece of history of our city, was built in just over two years at the end of the 19th century. Today, with modern technologies, it takes almost two years just for ordinary maintenance work. It is unacceptable”.
The prolonged closure of the funicular has caused traffic chaos in Vomero, especially during rush hour. The lack of an efficient replacement service has aggravated the inconvenience for students, workers and residents.
“Despite the protests and requests to speed up the process, the work is proceeding slowly. It is as if the city were indifferent to the problem. Naples risks setting a new negative record for the duration of a funicular closure,” continues Capodanno.
