QThis morning, in the evocative Salone Morelli of the Municipality of Amalfi, the handover ceremony at the helm of the Local Maritime Office of Amalfi was held. The outgoing commander, Oronzo Montagna, handed over the baton to Achille Giordano, in the presence of Captain Sirio Faè, head of the Port Authority of Salerno since last July, and the Mayor of Amalfi, Daniele Milano.
The ceremony was attended by numerous civil, military and religious authorities, including Captain Alessandro Bonsignore, commander of the Amalfi Carabinieri Company, the deputy mayor Matteo Bottone and members of the Municipal Administration, as well as Don Andrea Alfieri, parish priest of Conca dei Marini.
Oronzo Montagna, 1st Lieutenant Np, gave a moving and applause-filled farewell speech. Montagna, who is set for a new assignment in Sardinia, was praised for his commitment during his three years at the helm of the Amalfi Local Maritime Office. During his service, he faced significant challenges, including managing emergencies resulting from the tragic collision between a sailing ship and a gozzo that occurred in the waters between Furore and Conca dei Marini in August of last year.
Mayor Milan expressed words of gratitude towards Montagna, underlining his ability to maintain a fruitful institutional collaboration even in complex situations. The new commander Achille Giordano, coming from Messina where he directed a patrol boat, received good wishes for an equally effective job, especially in view of next year, when Amalfi will host the 70th edition of the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics of Italy. The official change of command will take place on Monday 9 September 2024, marking a new chapter for the Amalfi Local Maritime Office.
