“Decades have passed hoping that the area of Bagnoli could finally be relaunched and valorized.
Instead, we discover that the Government's project includes the construction of a second sewer overflow in the Gaiola Submerged Park, a unique site, recognized as a protected area and heritage at a national and international level".
These are the words of Roberta Gaeta, regional councilor of Europa Verde-Demos, during the presentation in the Council of the motion entitled "Regional initiatives for the protection of the Special Conservation Area IT8030041 - Seabeds of Gaiola and Nisida", approved unanimously.
“I asked the Regional Council to protect the Gaiola Submerged Park, as far as it is concerned – explains Gaeta –. The experts, including the president of the Park and the researchers of the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, have expressed their opposition to a project that would irreparably damage such an important site.
In addition to the experts, many citizens have also detected a real risk and have mobilised to ask the Ministry of the Environment and Invitalia to review the project".
Gaeta also emphasizes that in recent days, due to bad weather, problems related to waste water have occurred six times. "Not only from an environmental point of view, but also for the health of citizens, this situation is extremely worrying. Many people, unaware of the problem, went to the beach without being aware of the potential risks".
The councilor concludes by hoping that "other plants that do not discharge into the Gaiola Marine Park will be strengthened, where there are already modern structures financed by the Region, which could be further optimized. I hope that corrective actions will be implemented for a project that, as it is, is not sustainable."
