IThe Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, declared in an interview with Tg1 that the decision to revoke the mandate of Maria Rosaria Boccia was influenced by their personal relationship.
“We had a relationship, and that is also why I revoked the assignment,” the minister said. He also stressed that no public funds were used for the trips with Boccia, stating: “I never spent public money on her, I paid for everything myself.”
Visibly emotional, Sangiuliano tearfully apologized to his wife and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for the embarrassment he had caused them and the government. Despite offering his resignation, Meloni rejected it, with Sangiuliano reiterating: “I am not blackmailable”He showed the director of Tg1, Gian Marco Chiocci, his bank details and travel tickets, confirming that the expenses were paid personally.
During his appearance on Tg1, Sangiuliano said that talking about this topic is difficult because it involves a personal and emotional relationship, but he felt it was necessary to clarify.
Meanwhile, Maria Rosaria Boccia had announced on social media that she was waiting for the broadcast with a box of popcorn, ironically alluding to the situation. However, her first reaction was not positive: “Let's start telling lies,” she commented, also reiterating that she cannot be blackmailed.
Concluding his speech, Sangiulian he expressed his regret: "The first person I have to apologize to, because she is an exceptional person, is my wife. I apologize to Meloni for the embarrassment caused to her and to the government, and to my collaborators who found themselves involved in the affair."
