Dfter nearly two months of interruption, regional trains are back on the historic Naples-Salerno line. The route had been suspended since July 4 to allow Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), part of the FS Italiane Group, to carry out major extraordinary maintenance and infrastructure upgrades.
The works, which involved over 150 technicians from RFI and contractors, were carried out simultaneously on five construction sites operating 24 hours a day. The works, carried out using cranes, motorized vehicles and loaders, involved several critical areas along the line. Among the most significant interventions, we note the construction of the crossing tube for the future vehicle underpass for access to the Pietrarsa National Railway Museum, with the consequent elimination of a level crossing.
In addition, a pedestrian overpass in the municipality of Ercolano was demolished, part of a larger project that aims to eliminate three level crossings along the Naples-Salerno line. Waterproofing work was carried out on the Bourbon viaduct of Torre Annunziata and on a bridge in the municipality of Torre del Greco.
The overall value of the investment made by RFI for these interventions was approximately 21 million euros. These works are part of a broader extraordinary maintenance plan for the Naples-Salerno line, crossed daily by approximately 80 regional and long-distance trains. The plan is in addition to the ordinary maintenance activities, which are carried out regularly, especially at night, when rail traffic is interrupted.
