Napoli– Three days of chaos on the subway, thousands of passengers stranded and a city on the brink of paralysis.
The service of line 1 has gone haywire once again, amidst surprise strikes and a wave of medical certificates presented by employees of the ANM, the Neapolitan Mobility Company.
An explosive situation that triggered the reaction of the mayor Gaetano Manfredi: “You can’t call in sick and block the subway. It’s unacceptable.”
Blocks and inconveniences: tourists abandoned in Garibaldi, line 6 out of order
Today the collapse was total: at 12:45 the metro trains Line 1 they stopped for four hours due to a strike proclaimed by USB, but the problems had already started in the morning, with circulation limited to the route Dante-Piscinola. At the station Garibaldi, a crucial hub for tourists, hundreds of travellers were left stranded, many with luggage in tow. The same fate befell the Line 6, suspended “until the end of the service due to technical problems”.
But the real crux is therecord absenteeism among the employees ANM. In the last few days the medical certificates, leaving key locations such as the control centers, essential for safety.
The straw that broke the camel's back: the missing benefits
The silent protest of the staff seems to be linked to the failure to pay certain benefitsin the March paycheck. But Manfredi doesn't agree: "This was not a strike, it is an abuse. There may have been misunderstandings, but you don't paralyze an entire city."
The mayor admitted that there will be verifications on the cuts, but reiterated: “We discuss by respecting the rules, without leaving citizens stranded”. Meanwhile, tomorrow the Municipality will call a urgent summit to find a solution.
Social media in revolt: "Naples stopped, it's a scandal"
The anger of the Neapolitans has exploded on the web, with hundreds of posts denouncing the chronic disservice. There are those who speak of "shame" and those who fear the worst in view of the high tourist season.
A crisis that risks damaging the image of the city, while the ANM – already under pressure – will have to face a test of credibility. Manfredi closes with an appeal: “I hope everything will be resolved soon, but this is not a glorious page for Naples.”

I think the situation on the Naples subway is very serious and worrying. Many passengers have been blocked without any information, and this is not right. I hope the authorities find a solution as soon as possible.
