Avellino. The Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Naples, with the support of the Calitri station, have recovered two precious 2006th century stone pinnacles, stolen in XNUMX from the façade of the Customs House in Piazza Amendola in Avellino.
The artifacts, about 1,5 meters high and subject to monumental constraint, were identified in a private property in Calitri thanks to a search warrant issued by the Avellino Prosecutor's Office. Four people were reported for receiving stolen goods and violating the rules for the protection of cultural heritage.
Historical and artistic value
The pinnacles, attributed to the school of Cosimo Fanzago, were fundamental elements of the seventeenth-century façade of the Dogana, seriously damaged by a fire in 1992. Their disappearance had made a complete philological reconstruction impossible during the restoration work still in progress.
After a technical examination by the Superintendency, the finds were entrusted to the judicial custody of the mayor of Calitri, pending their return to Avellino.
“This discovery gives the city back a fundamental piece of its architectural history,” commented an official from the Superintendency.

It is really important that cultural assets are recovered and preserved. The pinnacles are a part of Avellino's history and their disappearance has created a void. We hope that the restoration can complete the facade as it was before.
