Avellino – For over seven months, the 26-year-old Neapolitan prisoner Paolo Piccolo has been lying in a vegetative state at the Moscati hospital in Avellino, the victim of a brutal attack that took place on October 24 inside the Irpinia prison.
Today the young man weighs just 24 kilos and is still alive only thanks to the intervention of doctors. But for his family it is a life hanging by a thread, in general indifference.
The alarm was raised by the young man's grandmother, Cira Russo, together with the family's lawyer, Costantino Cardiello, and the provincial guarantor of persons deprived of liberty, Carlo Mele. "Paolo has been forgotten," they denounce. "After 211 days of hospitalization, no facility willing to take him in for rehabilitation has been found."
"We are talking about the impotence of the State," says lawyer Cardiello, "which first failed to guarantee his safety in prison and today is unable to protect his right to health and life."
Meanwhile, ten inmates have been sent to trial for the attack, accused of attempted murder and kidnapping. The trial, requested by the Avellino Prosecutor's Office led by Domenico Airoma, will begin on June 27. A date awaited by the family as the only possible glimmer of hope for truth and justice.
