The Novel: History, Archaeology and Literature on the Golden Mile
Set in 1738, The Repentance of the Prince of Elboeuf tells the story of the prince's return to his villa in Portici after almost thirty years, in search of the last hidden treasure: a statue of Calliope, muse of poetry. In the background, the suggestive scenery of the Golden Mile and the nascent Bourbon palace commissioned by Charles of Bourbon. The novel intertwines personal ambitions, intrigues and the first archaeological explorations of Campania.
