Naples – From symbol of Camorra power to beacon of legality and opportunity: in via Roma towards Scampia n. 110, a property confiscated from organized crime is transformed into a center of hope.
Here comes to life @fattoascampia, an inclusive social tailoring shop, the beating heart of the “Tessitori di Bene” project, supported by the Fondazione Con il Sud as part of the “Properties confiscated from the mafia 2023” notice.
The project, promoted by the Fondazione Città Nuova Ets in partnership with the Chi rom e … chi no social promotion association, the Jorit Foundation and the L'Orsa Maggiore social cooperative, is the result of a long and passionate journey.
The tailoring shop @fattoascampia boasts among its members 16 young women from the neighborhood, who, after dropping out of school and being reported by social services, have completed a course of education and professional training.
Today they are ready not only to work, but also to train other young people from Scampia, creating a real social hub oriented towards work and economic integration.
The Voice of the Institutions and of the “Seamstresses”
Numerous authorities participated in the opening event, underlining the value of the initiative. Present were the Councilor for Legality of the Campania Region, Prefect Mario Morcone, the president of the Fondazione Con il Sud, Professor Stefano Consiglio, Roberto Sanseverino, president of the Fondazione Città Nuova, and Nunzia Ragosta, director of the Confiscated Property Office of the Municipality of Naples. A fundamental contribution also came from the Jorit Foundation, present with the well-known street artist.
“In Campania we are doing a great job,” said Mario Morcone. “The return of what crime has taken from citizens brings jobs to young people and innovation. This is the right path. Finally we are starting to understand that confiscated assets are not linked to 'niche' activities but everything can be transformed into real opportunities for the future.”
Roberto Sanseverino highlighted the dual meaning of the project: “We have taken away a good from crime and at the same time we have given the kids the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of textiles by training them as tailors. We started six years ago with sixteen girls, today we have 122 participants. It is a great success. Legality does not mean not stealing but it means having a dignified job, the right to holidays, maternity and pension.”
Alessia, one of the “sartine” of Scampia, also testified to the success of the initiative: “Choosing this path has helped me a lot. I am happy with what I have built with all the people who have supported me. At the beginning I had some doubts, also due to inexperience. Looking back, I can say that I have never made a better choice. All together we will achieve further satisfaction.”
The project aims to create an integrated development hub in one of the most fragile areas of Naples, Secondigliano-Scampia, promoting social, cultural and economic growth through social entrepreneurship.
