The Nations League final between Portugal and Spain, played on Sunday at the Allianz Arena in Munich, was marked by a tragedy that shocked the public and the protagonists. A fan died after falling from the central stands during the first half of extra time, ending up in the press box below. Immediate help from paramedics and police intervention were in vain: UEFA confirmed the death in the evening.
The accident, which occurred under the incredulous eyes of journalists and spectators, cast a very heavy shadow on the outcome of the competition, won by Portugal on penalties after the 2-2 draw in regular time. “Extremely sad news”, said Portuguese coach Roberto Martinez, while his Spanish colleague Luis de la Fuente dedicated words of condolence in the post-match press conference: “It reminds us what really matters in life.”
The circumstances of the fall are still unclear, but according to initial reports, the fan fell about eight meters. Both federations publicly expressed their closeness to the victim's family, emphasizing how the tragedy overshadowed any sporting result.
