Naples – Transport alarm goes off in the Northern Area of Naples. Starting from June 23 and for over three months, the Piscinola-Scampia, Chiaiano and Frullone stations of Line 1 of the metro will remain closed to allow for extraordinary works announced by theANM.
A decision, communicated only on June 6, which has aroused strong indignation among citizens, committees, movements and representatives of the social and cultural realities of the territory.
The measure, valid until September 15, risks isolating entire neighborhoods and municipalities in the hinterland such as Mugnano, Marano, Giugliano, Calvizzano, Qualiano, Villaricca, in addition to the areas served by the North-East metro line such as Aversa.
According to estimates, over a million passengers will be affected by the stop: commuters, students, workers, forced to find alternative solutions to reach Naples.
The protests point the finger at the management of the intervention plan, defined as "an improvised and short-sighted operation". In particular, the lack of an adequate replacement service is denounced.
“An ANM train can carry up to 1.250 people – reads a joint note – and at least 15 buses would be needed to compensate for its capacity. An unfeasible hypothesis with the current rubber fleet”. In the past, citizens underline, the shuttles have already proven insufficient, with delays, crowds and stops far from homes.
Also weighing is the comparison with other areas of the city, where – the protest promoters note – maintenance work has been carried out without prolonged blockades, especially in areas with a tourist vocation. “For the Municipality this would be a sustainable inconvenience. It’s a shame that it is precisely workers and students who use those trains every day”, they attack.
For this reason the realities of the Northern Area firmly ask:
A truly effective replacement service, with frequent and reliable trips;
The immediate opening of a discussion table in the prefecture between ANM, institutions and citizens;
A clear and transparent timetable of interventions;
Traffic management measures to limit disruption to traffic.
“The right to mobility must be guaranteed – they conclude –. Promises or stopgap solutions are not enough: we need a serious plan shared with the territory”.
A public meeting and further institutional initiatives are planned in the coming days.
