Eight cases of West Nile virus in Campania
NNaples – Eight confirmed cases of West Nile virus infection have been recorded in Campania, four of whom are in serious condition and are currently hospitalized in the intensive care units of the Moscati hospital in Aversa and the Cotugno hospital in Naples.
Most of those infected had recently stayed in the Baia Domizia area, on the Caserta coast, where the first cluster of infections developed.
West Nile virus, transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes, represents an emerging health problem in Italy as well. It is not a new virus globally, but its arrival in Campania It is particularly worrying given the growing number of serious cases that have emerged in a short period of time.
The symptoms observed in hospitalized patients are high fever, fatigue, and general malaise, typical manifestations of the most severe forms of the infection. The areas currently under observation, in addition to the Caserta coastline, include the wetlands and marshes of Persano and the mouth of the Sele River in the Salerno area, where environmental conditions favor the proliferation of mosquitoes that carry the virus.
Campania Regional President Vincenzo De Luca also weighed in on the issue, reassuring us: "The problem exists, but we're not seeing any widespread outbreaks. The situation is under control. We're carefully examining the characteristics of these emerging viruses and have the technical and scientific expertise to address the situation."
West Nile virus, which has already caused outbreaks in other Italian regions in recent years, can be particularly dangerous for the elderly or immunocompromised. In most cases, the infection is mild or asymptomatic, but in a small percentage of cases, it can cause serious neurological complications such as encephalitis or meningitis.
Health authorities recommend individual prevention measures, especially in coastal areas and near stagnant water: avoid mosquito bites, use repellent, wear long clothing during the evening hours, and protect homes with mosquito nets.
The Campania Region, in collaboration with local health authorities, has begun careful monitoring of cases and at-risk areas, while entomological control efforts continue to identify and limit the spread of the virus in sensitive areas.
