A one-year suspended prison sentence and a massive fine of over €380: this is the sentence handed down by the Madrid Provincial Court to Carlo Ancelotti, current Brazil coach and former Real Madrid manager. He received no prison time, but the tax fraud charge for 2014 was upheld. The charge for 2015, however, was dismissed, resulting in a partial acquittal for the Italian coach.
According to the Spanish press, the case concerned the alleged omission of income related to the exploitation of his image rights, which were sold to other entities, during his first experience on the bench of the Real MadridThe total amount of the alleged fraud was nearly €1,1 million. The prosecutor had requested a much harsher sentence: 4 years and 9 months in prison.
Last April, Ancelotti had tried to clarify his position before the judges, claiming that he had relied on his English consultant without ever suspecting irregularities: “When Real Madrid offered to sell me their image rights, I got in touch with my English consultant and after that I didn’t worry about it anymore because everything seemed right to me.” A defense that only partially convinced the court.

Ancelotti's conviction came as a surprise to many, even though the tax fraud charges are serious. But I don't understand how he can only get a one-year suspended sentence when the sums involved are so high. Is it right that footballers should be treated differently from other citizens? It seems a bit strange to me.
