Mysterious fire in hit-and-run driver's house
Mondragone- A mysterious fire has devastated the home of Pietro Cascarino, the 57-year-old convicted felon accused of being the hit-and-run driver who a week ago hit and killed 16-year-old Luigi Petrella who was riding his scooter.
The man, brother of the repentant Giovanni Cascarino of the La Torre clan, was arrested the following day after about 24 hours on the run. The fire broke out at the same time as the boy's funeral.
Sudden flames engulfed the home in Cascarino, along the provincial road to Falciano del Massico. The firefighters, supported by the Carabinieri, worked for hours to put out the blaze, which destroyed furniture and furnishings.
Initial investigations exclude malice or revenge for Luigi's death: the fire would have started from a short circuit caused by an illegal connection to the electricity grid. But in a story already marked by the shadow of crime, the doubt remains.
Cascarino, already known to the police, was initially charged with road homicide and failure to provide assistance. But after the technical assessments on Luigi's car and scooter, the hypothesis became more serious: voluntary homicide.
The impact was so violent that it threw the boy against a lamppost, leaving him dying on the asphalt. The investigation is now focusing on the video footage from the cameras, to reconstruct the exact dynamics.
Last night, thousands of people – mostly young people, friends and schoolmates – filled the streets of Mondragone in a silent torchlight procession. Many were wearing T-shirts with the photo of Luigi and the writing “Luigi lives”, the same slogan that appeared on the walls of the city.
The procession started from via Padule, where Luigi lost his life, now become a place of pilgrimage with flowers, messages and prayers. "Here the young people must shout the desire for a different future", said Don Paolo Marotta.
Among the crowd, also the mayor Francesco Lavanga, representatives of Libera and the writer Sergio Nazzaro, who denounced in no uncertain terms: «Mondragone is invaded by drugs, alcohol and violence. People die because criminals go around unpunished, without helmets, with their phones in their hands. And the controls? Zero».
