SSarno – Another episode of violence against healthcare workers occurred late yesterday evening at the Villa Malta hospital in Sarno, where a man attacked a doctor and a nurse in the emergency room.
The man, identified as PM, 29 years old, resident in Sarno, had presented himself to the hospital with his son, suffering from a fever. After triage, the case was classified as "code green," meaning it was not urgent. But the medical staff's assessment triggered a violent reaction from the father, who began yelling and cursing at the staff, demanding immediate care for his child.
Within moments, the tension escalated: the 29-year-old kicked and punched a pediatrician and a nurse, both of whom were then treated in the same emergency room where they were working.
The intervention of the State Police, who arrived on the scene from the nearby police station, restored calm. The man was arrested on charges of assaulting a public official and disrupting a public service.
The incident rekindles the spotlight on the scourge of violence against healthcare workers, an increasingly common occurrence in Italian emergency rooms, and reiterates the alarm among medical organizations regarding the need to ensure greater safety within hospital facilities.
