Frederick II takes the field against the West Nile Virus
NNaples – As West Nile Virus cases rise in several Italian regions and public concern grows, the Federico II University of Naples is responding to the emergency by deploying a task force of experts to support the Ministry of Health in virus prevention and containment efforts.
Professor Gaetano Oliva, president of the School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (Samv) at the University of Naples, stated this, emphasizing the institution's concrete commitment: "We are available to support the Ministry's Prevention Department's efforts to address the current epidemic, which is also affecting Campania."
In recent weeks, in fact, fears linked to the spread of the virus – transmitted mainly by the bite of infected mosquitoes – are growing, also due to the increasingly frequent cases reported in Southern Italy, including Campania.
Although symptoms are mild in most cases, the infection can sometimes develop into severe neurological conditions, especially in the most vulnerable individuals.
To support health authorities, Federico II has made entomologists, epidemiologists, and infectious disease specialists available to assist with monitoring, data collection, and scientific analysis. The expertise of the Departments of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and Animal Production will also be used for in-depth studies on the virus vector, mosquitoes, and possible control strategies.
Beyond research, the University will also participate in training and information campaigns aimed at both healthcare workers and the general public, to raise awareness of the best practices to reduce the risk of infection.
A synergic commitment that aims to strengthen the prevention network and reassure the population, increasingly alarmed by the new outbreaks recorded along the Peninsula.
