SAlerno – The crystalline waters of the “Divine” Amalfi Coast are once again under the surveillance and protection of the “Pelikan System Costa d'Amalfi,” the anti-pollution naval unit that has resumed its cleanup mission between Vietri sul Mare and Positano.
The new summer season of this "floating laboratory for the protection of the sea", as the mayor of Cetara defines it, has officially started from Cetara, where the vessel is docked. cetara, Fortunato Della Monica, also president of the FLAG “Approdo di Ulisse”, who supported the acquisition of the vessel.
The vessel, a Pelikan 23-class eco-boat, was purchased in 2023 by the local action group for the development of coastal zones, thanks to the 2014-2020 FEAMP Campania fund. Launched two years ago, its mission is to identify and collect waste, both solid and liquid, including submerged waste.
The "Pelikan System" is equipped with cutting-edge technology. A remotely operated submarine explores the ocean depths. Parametric probes detect pollutants and continuously monitor the health of the water. A drone detects floating debris on the surface.

"It will patrol the coastal areas, ports, and marinas of the municipalities of the Amalfi Coast and the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area," added Della Monica. Special anti-pollution kits are also on board for the treatment of foam, hydrocarbons, and greasy and oily substances, both on the surface and in midwater.
This intervention is part of a broader project, conceived by Garbage Group, which promotes an integrated approach to marine protection. The "Pelikan System," already active in other areas of the country, combines upstream waste collection via river barriers—which intercept plastic before it reaches the sea—with a direct operational presence at sea, thanks to technologically advanced naval units.
The operationalization of the “Pelikan System” represents a significant step towards protecting one of Italy's most famous and delicate coastal stretches, combining technological innovation with a commitment to environmental protection.
Given the importance of a healthy marine environment for tourism and the ecosystem, what other initiatives could be implemented to strengthen water protection in areas like the Amalfi Coast?
