NNaples – "Without blood, there's no cure." This is the slogan of the new campaign launched by the Cardarelli Hospital in Naples, which is appealing to the public in the height of summer with an urgent appeal: "Before leaving for your vacation, come and donate blood."
The initiative, shared via social media, features the heads of the complex operating units of Southern Italy's largest hospital. A clear and direct message: at least 150 donations are needed every day to ensure routine and emergency operations, from scheduled surgeries to emergency room care.
Summer emergency: patients in hospital, donors on vacation
The situation has been exacerbated since the summer, when the number of donors has dropped dramatically, but healthcare needs remain unchanged. In particular, there is a severe shortage of blood groups O-positive and O-negative, but the appeal is open to all citizens, regardless of blood type.
"Without blood, we can't work," say the directors of the intensive care, internal medicine, interventional radiology, surgery, oncology, neurosurgery, trauma centers, hematology, pulmonology, neonatology, orthopedics, and many other specialties. "Without blood, we can't cure. We can't save you."
A single gesture can make a difference: with a single donation, in fact, up to three lives can be saved.
The general manager: "The health of all depends on everyone's civic sense."
"Many are leaving, few are donating. But patients remain. Surgeries continue, and the need for blood is growing," warns Cardarelli General Manager Antonio d'Amore. "Collective health," he adds, "also depends on individual responsibility. Blood isn't produced in a laboratory, it's not bought: it's donated. And every donation is a gesture that benefits both the recipient and the donor."
Donating pays off: free check-up, freebies, and a day off
In addition to the social and human value, donating also brings tangible benefits. Donors receive a free complete blood check-up worth approximately €200. Cardarelli also offers free parking and a kit with a bag, T-shirt, and bracelet featuring the hospital's logo. Employees are entitled to one day of paid leave.
The Blood Donation Center is located on the ground floor of Pavilion E of the hospital and is open Monday to Saturday, from 8:00 to 12:00.

I think the campaign is important, but I don't understand why they say so much blood is needed. If everyone donated a little, there wouldn't be any problems. Maybe even people on vacation could come and donate if they had time.
