Cagnazzo defends himself, speaking of innocence and pain.
NNaples - Carabinieri Colonel Fabio Cagnazzo, one of the suspects in the Salerno Prosecutor's Office investigation into the murder of the fisherman mayor Angelo Vassallo, which occurred in Acciaroli on September 5, 2010, has spoken publicly again.
In a lengthy post on social media, the officer reiterated his innocence and announced a new appeal to the Supreme Court of Cassation following his release last May by decision of the Court of Review.
«I wish to reiterate, this time personally and not through my lawyers, my total lack of involvement in the contested facts – he wrote Bitch –. For fifteen years I have been dealing with a painful matter that is not my own, already archived three times by the judiciary."
The colonel, arrested in late 2023 and held in prison for approximately six months, was released after the Supreme Court of Cassation overturned a previous precautionary order, finding serious flaws in the evidentiary framework.
The same Court of Review, in its new decision, found that the conditions for detention were not met. However, the Salerno Prosecutor's Office requested that Cagnazzo and other suspects be sent to trial.
"The Supreme Court," the official explains, "has highlighted the gaps in the weight of the evidence. For this very reason, we will file a new appeal."
Cagnazzo publicly thanked those who supported him during his months in prison: "A heartfelt thank you to my lifelong friends, colleagues, collaborators, and even the simple acquaintances who expressed their solidarity. In over thirty years of service, I have never betrayed my oath of loyalty to the Italian Republic and to the good people whose servant I still feel. Hurt, but convinced."
Finally, a plea to read the documents: "The truth is contained in the more than 80 pages of the case file, which few—almost no one—have actually read. I will continue to believe in justice. Resentment is not mine."
Fabio Cagnazzo's name had already emerged in the early stages of the investigation into the murder of Vassallo, the environmentalist mayor killed with nine gunshots while returning home. But over the years, the investigative leads have been repeatedly stalled and closed.
Only in 2023 did the Prosecutor's Office reopen the case, suggesting a new reconstruction of the crime, which led to a massive investigation and new arrests. Now, the case is once again in the hands of the judiciary.

E' interessante che il colonnello Cagnazzo continui a proclamare la sua innocenza dopo tutti questi anni. Ma è importante anche considerare le evidenze e gli atti presentati dalla Procura, che potrebbero dare un'altra visione della vicenda.
