A large fire on the border between Castellammare di Stabia and Pompeii is causing serious disruption to motorists and traffic on the Circumvesuviana train.
A towering cloud of black smoke, visible for miles, billowed from the fire that broke out in an old, abandoned car depot located right next to the railway line on one side and along the motorway junction on the other.
There are six firefighting teams on site trying to put out the flames. Trains are running Circumvesuviana Traffic along the Pompeii-Castellammare-Sorrento route and vice versa has been closed, while plans are underway to also block traffic along the motorway link.
Citizens living in the area have been asked to stay indoors and not open windows or balconies. The same applies to a small hotel located nearby.
Now it will be necessary to understand whether it was a deliberate fire or whether the flames developed through spontaneous combustion.
