West Nile virus is not COVID-19, but it could become a serious health problem if politicians continue to neglect prevention. The warning comes loud and clear from Bruno Zuccarelli, president of the Order of Surgeons and Dentists of Naples, who denounces a serious institutional shortsightedness in the management of public healthcare: “If investments had been made in time to strengthen the Prevention Departments - points out - Today we wouldn't be forced to chase the risk with emergency cleanups."
Zuccarelli is keen to underline how the West Nile It is not comparable in terms of spread and severity to Covid, but for this very reason its appearance must be read as an alarm bell: "We can't continue to ignore preventive healthcare. The 'never again' everyone swore after Covid is proving to be an empty phrase. The institutions already seem to have forgotten it."
The call for calm is accompanied by a concrete request to politicians: more resources, more personnel, and a serious environmental monitoring strategy are needed. This urgent need echoes the request of the Prefect of Naples, Michele Di Bari. “Environmental cleanups are essential – reiterates Zuccarelli – especially to protect the most vulnerable patients. Those who battle serious illnesses every day cannot be exposed to the risk of infections transmitted by a simple mosquito bite. Ensuring healthy environments is a duty, not an option."
