It's yet another gambling tragedy that unfolded yesterday in Casal di Principe, where a 50-year-old man was arrested by State Police for assaulting his 76-year-old mother, guilty only of not wanting—or being able to—give him more money to throw at the slot machines.
Officers from the local police station's Flying Squad responded to a report of a domestic dispute, but what they found was worse than they expected. The elderly woman, in a state of shock, showed signs of a violent struggle: bruises, scratches, and, most importantly, a head injury caused by the beatings she had received from her son.
Investigators, delving into the matter, discovered that this was not an isolated incident. The woman had previously suffered other abuses, both physical and psychological, at the hands of the same son, all linked to the same tragic cause: her gambling addiction.
The victim was rushed to the hospital, while the 50-year-old, still guilty of that one unforgiving crime—a son's betrayal of his mother—was arrested for extortion and domestic abuse and incarcerated in the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison.
