IIschia – Carabinieri conducted extensive checks at the port of Ischia, the island's tourist hub. This morning, the spotlight was on a couple arrested on charges of possessing false documents and two young men charged with drug dealing, in an operation that led to the identification of 201 people and the search of 121 vehicles.
Placido Briante, a 63-year-old Neapolitan with a criminal record, and his partner, a 55-year-old woman with no criminal record, were arrested. The two, intercepted shortly before boarding a hydrofoil headed to Naples, were found in possession of identity cards counterfeit electronic cards, bearing their photos and personal details but with a false island residence.
The trick? Traveling at a discounted rate for residents. After their arrest, the couple chose to spend the night under house arrest at the hotel where they had stayed the previous days, paying out of their own pockets. "A wonderful facility, perfect even for detention," they reportedly stated with a hint of irony. This morning, the two are expected in court in Naples for their trial.

It's true that the Carabinieri operation was significant, but I wonder if these controls are sufficient to stop crime. The island deserves to be safer for all the tourists who visit.
