Omar Marino returns to Ponticelli, with the neighborhood on high alert.
PThe De Micco-De Martino clan is making its presence felt again in the town of Monticelli. The recent release of Omar Marino, 50, a leading figure in the criminal organization known as the "Bodo" clan, has raised alarm among investigators.
A return that has already sparked tensions and fears in the neighborhood and among local organized crime circles.
Marino, considered one of the most influential bosses of the Mafia clan, was released last week thanks to a judicial turn of events. The sixth criminal section of the Naples Court of Appeal granted the request of his defense attorney, Luca Gili, recognizing the continuity of the crimes for which he had been convicted with final sentences.
The overall sentence was thus re-determined at 10 years and 8 months, which he had already served in full, thanks in part to the so-called "pre-suffering" period. Marino was therefore released from prison ahead of the original expiration of his sentence.
His release could represent a turning point for the clan, already shaken by a series of arrests that had dismantled its structure. According to investigative sources, Marino's presence in the area has already fueled a new era of racketeering.
Several reports speak of an increase in extortion demands directed at the managers of drug dealing centers controlled by the De Micco-De Martino clan. "Everything has increased, and so has the amount you have to pay us to work for us," is reportedly the intimidating message aimed at pushers and drug trafficking leaders.
Those who refuse to pay are at great risk: the threats, some sources say, reach even inside their homes, fueling a climate of terror reminiscent of the darkest periods of feuding between rival clans.
Omar Marino is not a new name to the police. His loyalty to the De Micco clan It is documented by decades of criminal activity. One of the most serious episodes involving him is emblematic: the kidnapping of Massimo Clemente, which occurred over ten years ago.
According to the reconstruction by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate, Marino, along with his accomplice Ciro Cirelli, forced Clemente into a car and held him captive for over an hour in a garage, with the aim of extorting money from his brother Salvatore, who ran a drug dealing operation in Conocal Park. This retaliation was also planned to target the rival D'Amico clan, known as the "Fraulellas," who were then dominant in the Conocal area.
Although the victim had not filed a complaint, the investigation was continued thanks to wiretaps and evidence gathered by the Ponticelli police station. The seizure emerged as part of another investigation into extortion against drug dealers from the opposing group.
Ultimately, the Clemente brothers themselves, pressed by investigators, admitted the facts, though without naming anyone. It was the police who identified those responsible and provided the Anti-Mafia Directorate with the information needed to issue a pre-trial detention order. Marino and Cirelli were sentenced on appeal to 7 years and 4 months.
Marino's criminal past is littered with violent episodes. The most high-profile occurred on February 24, 2008, when he stormed Villa Betania Hospital and shot a nurse, who he believed had been having an affair with his sister.
Today, his return to Ponticelli could mark a new phase in the reorganization of the De Micco-De Martino clan. A phase marked by threats, extortion, and renewed tensions in the fragile criminal landscape of eastern Naples. Investigators are on high alert: the risk of the clan regaining a central role in the city's Camorra scene is very real.
