A new episode of violence in the emergency room of the San Pio Hospital in Benevento has reignited concerns about the safety of healthcare workers. This time, the response was immediate and harsh: "Enough is enough. It's intolerable that those who dedicate their lives to saving others should have to fear for their own safety.", declared the president of the Benevento Medical Association, Luca Milano, expressing full solidarity with the attacked colleagues.
Milan recalled how the Order has already taken concrete steps to raise awareness on the issue, from launching public campaigns and informational videos to involving schools, institutions, and law enforcement. Free training courses for doctors and targeted activities to improve communication with patients have been launched. But, he cautions, “each new attack shows that there is still much to do.”
The president does not mince his words: We need permanent safety measures in emergency rooms, rapid response protocols, and clear penalties for those who attack. This isn't just a public order issue, but a cultural, civil, and human issue. Violence kills humanity and tramples on the value of life itself.
The request is clear: a concerted effort involving politicians, institutions, the judiciary, law enforcement, and citizens. Because, as he recalls, Milan, "indifference is complicity" and workplace safety is not a privilege, but a right that, for those who provide care, must be guaranteed twice: to protect those who work in the wards and to ensure patients receive safe, quality care.
